We usually reserve a corner of our newsletter to highlight a Pitt County Schools counselor or school social worker. This month, we want to highlight a rising social worker who has joined our team at Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County. Meghan Stello is a Bachelor of Social Work intern spending 32 hours a week with PPS-PC. Please take a moment to get to know her, and help us wish her well in her final semester as an ECU undergraduate!

PPS-PC: Social work can be a hard career, and we are glad you’ve chosen it! What made you want to become a social worker?

Meghan: After learning about all of the different challenges and hardships that many of my peers in high school were quietly experiencing, I knew I wanted to be a social worker. I want to be a social worker so that I can advocate for others and improve social welfare.

PPS-PC: What are you most looking forward to about interning with Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County?

Meghan: I’m looking forward to talking with public school parents and hearing their stories. I’m looking forward to hearing about the various experiences families have had with their children’s education and learning about the various perspectives people in our community have about the public education system.

PPS-PC: What are some of your ultimate goals as a social worker after you graduate?

MeghanAfter graduating, I hope to attend ECU’s Advanced Standing Masters program in Social Work and then attend law school with the goal of becoming a policymaker one day.

PPS-PC: Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County collaborates often with other community resources in an effort to help our whole community strengthen public education. From your perspective as a brand new social worker, how do you think community collaboration benefits public schools?

Meghan: As a new social worker, I believe it is important for Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County to collaborate with members in our community. This organization helps strengthen Pitt County’s public education system by working together and sharing resources. Many individuals in our community come from all different backgrounds and have various resources that would benefit our students and provide them with opportunities and support that they may not have had or would ever have.

PPS-PC: What else would you like parents to know about you as you begin this internship?

Meghan:  One thing I’d like parents to know about me as I begin my internship is that I have a strong desire to help others. I enjoy hearing from members of our community and learning about their various experiences. Because everyone has a unique story to tell about their lives, I believe it is critical for individuals to take the time to learn about the stories of others in order to gain new perspectives and walk in the shoes of others.
