Did you know that National School Choice Week (NSCW) was the week of January 22nd?  Making that designation and promoting it can inform, inspire and empower parents to discover the K-12 education options for their children and help generate widespread public awareness of the importance of school choice. Every child is unique, and all children learn differently so having school choice is important.

Pitt County Schools offers school choice through open enrollment. For the 2023-24 school year 24 PCS schools will be open enrollment schools. List of Open Enrollment Schools (2023-2024) – https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/394

Pitt County Schools offers one of the highest number of open enrollment options in Eastern North Carolina. What are the hopes, dreams and goals for your child? What matters most for your child’s future? What are your child’s strengths and weaknesses? All PCS schools offer a high quality education but different schools have different programs and areas of focus. For example, three schools in the district offer a Spanish immersion program. As you think about the needs of your child, consider learning more about what different schools have to offer. One great way to do that is to tour schools and we are in the midst of the Spring School Tour Series offering a tour at all PCS.

There are a few things to keep in mind about open enrollment –

-Families must provide transportation for their child to attend an open enrollment school if that school is not the district assigned school.

-Open enrollment for the 2023-24 school year begins on March 1st. Priority open enrollment is from March 1st – March 15th. All applications received in that time frame will be considered at the same time. Once you complete the application process you should receive a confirmation email. Please do not contact the department asking if your application was received or approved. All applications received during March 1st – March 15th will receive an email after March 16th indicating approval or denial. The department will not be responding to emails or phone calls to check on the status of your application during the period of March 1st – 15th.

-Open enrollment applications are completed online –https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/394

-If you are interested in one of the Spanish Immersion Programs you first need to be accepted to one of those schools through open enrollment then you would apply with that school to be a part of the Spanish Immersion Program at that school.

-If you are not sure what schools are in the attendance area where you live you can use this link to enter your address to find out that information –https://gis.pittcountync.gov/opis/

-If you have received approval for open enrollment in previous years there is no need to reapply. Open enrollment is through exit grade.

General Enrollment –

-If your child will be attending Kindergarten at the school in the attendance area of your home address check with that school about the start date for kindergarten enrollment – Kindergarten enrollment begins in the spring but exact dates may be different from school to school.

-If your child has attended a private school, homeschool, charter school or a school outside of the PCS district and you want them to attend a PCS school in the fall, you will need to contact the school in your attendance area to get an enrollment packet or apply for open enrollment if you want them to attend a school outside of the attendance area based on your home address
