Welcome Sylvia Jennings – Spring 2024 PPS-PC Intern

Sylvia Jennings is the Spring 2024 intern for PPS-PC. She is currently a senior working on her bachelor’s degree in social work at East Carolina University. She is a member of the ECU Enchanted Reads Book Club and the treasurer for the ECU Yoga Club. Sylvia hopes to continue her work at non-profit organizations after graduation in her hometown of Elizabeth City, NC. She is excited to work with PPS-PC through her internship because of the perspective she will gain through the diverse conversations with community members. She is also excited to learn information about Pitt County schools through the multiple school tours that will happen this semester. Sylvia looks forward to learning ideas from her internship that she can take with her into her career as a social worker.

2024 Kindergarten 101 Workshops –

PPS-PC hosted Kindergarten 101 Workshops on Tuesday, January 23rd and Thursday, January 25th. Over 60 people attended the workshops where presenters talked about what to expect when children start kindergarten in the fall. Topics discussed included Kindergarten curriculum, Kindergarten enrollment, and open enrollment options. Participants learned about Pitt County Schools Nutrition and the school nurse program. Pediatricians also shared advice about starting Kindergarten from the perspective of a doctor. Two elementary school principals talked about what is helpful to know about starting kindergarten from an administrator’s perspective. Participants also heard from a parent whose child started kindergarten in the fall of 2023 as they shared what that experience was like.

A recording of the January 23rd  workshop can be viewed on the PPS-PC You Tube Channel Kindergarten 101 Playlist – https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLzh6Bm07Ij87ZP6nxoQzO_kpZxkpMzmbv

PPS-PC/Team Boneyard Partnership –

As a partner with Team Boneyard, the collective started to support ECU athletes through NIL, PPS-PC facilitated the connection of ECU student athletes with several elementary, K-8 and middle schools in Pitt County. Weekly connections with these schools began on January 29th and will continue through the end of the semester. So far 55 student athletes have spent over 50 hours building relationships with students and staff at 9 different schools.

“It is great to have the athletes visit and interact with our students. Our students have enjoyed their presence. It is important for the students at Pactolus to be exposed to college students early so they can see what is possible for them. This is what community is all about. It takes a village to impact the next generation.” Ms. Lucas, Principal Pactolus School

“It has truly been an honor to have these athletes come out and spend time with my students. The level of encouragement that these young men have added to my classroom has been amazing and I am just so blessed with the opportunity to have them come in and impact my classroom in such a great way. Thank you so much for the opportunity!!” Ms. Glenn, 2nd Grade Teacher Stokes School
