With the start of a new school year it is important to help set your children up for success. What does a healthy routine look like for your family during the morning, during the afternoon/evening and at bedtime? Establish a good routine that works best for your family and stick to it as best as possible.

Set realistic goals for your child for the school year. Involve them in the process by asking your child what they want to achieve during the school year. Kids of all ages can help set realistic goals. As a parent, champion their interests, reach out to others who have been there, and look for ways to help and support them.

Talk with your child about the school day. Here are some suggestions of questions to ask your child – How was your school day? Did you learn anything new? How did you feel about school today? Did you do anything differently today? Did anything concern you today that you’d like to talk about?Talking with your child is a really good opportunity to foster a safe and welcoming environment that children need in order to open up and express their feelings.

Talk with and get to know your child’s teachers. Throughout the year teachers invite parents to a parent teacher conference which is helpful. Between those conferences be intentional about frequent check-ins asking questions like: Is my child doing things as expected? Are they having any difficulty with specific emotions? Have you noticed patterns about how your child approaches certain things? Take the opportunity to let your child’s teachers know in a variety of ways that they are appreciated throughout the school year.

During the school year stay connected with what is happening at your child’s school and also with the school district. Did you know that Pitt County Schools has a new Podcast? Check out the PCS Connect Podcast on the district website homepage – pitt.k12.nc.us
