National School Social Work Week was March 5th – March 11th. Pitt County Schools are staffed by hardworking people with unique skill sets and areas of expertise. Although students spend the majority of their day with their teacher(s) there are many staff members at the school working hard to enhance each student’s educational experience.

The theme for National School Social Work Week 2023 is “We Rise”. School Social Workers rise up – supporting their students, families, and school communities. School Social Workers rise to share hope. They rise to listen and understand. They rise to challenge inequities. They rise to support all students.

Social workers working in Pitt County Schools serve as a liaison between home, school and community, with a primary focus on encouraging parental input and involvement, regular school attendance and removing barriers to achievement. School Social Workers are trained to assess the impact of a student’s total environment on the educational setting by identifying and addressing any existing concerns. Working in consultation with staff, parents and the community, social workers work hard to address the needs of each of their students.

During my time working with Pitt County Schools I saw firsthand the dedication the social worker at my school put into her role to serve the students of our school. Social workers use a variety of tools and resources to meet the needs of their students. Often their work happens in the community and at the homes of their students to make the necessary connection with parents. Everyday Pitt County Schools Social Workers rise up to serve their students.

At the March Pitt County Schools Board of Education Meeting the board acknowledged the hard work and dedication of all of the PCS School Social Workers. As a community let’s all rise to the challenge to make sure that our School Social workers know that they are appreciated and supported for all the work that they do for their students and families. – Written by Joshua Breazeale, PPS-PC Executive Director
