Summer break brings a welcome shift in routine for students, families, and educators. Long school days and early mornings give way to slower starts, outdoor play, and time to recharge. But summer also brings challenges—especially for students who rely on the structure of school, daily routines, and access to free meals. While PCS School Nutrition offers free breakfast and lunch at multiple school sites Monday–Thursday, transportation isn’t always accessible for the students who need it most. Camps and enrichment opportunities exist, but not all families can access them.

Still, summer moves quickly, and before long, the first day of school will be here. Below are practical, family‑friendly ideas to help you make the most of summer while staying ready for a smooth transition into the new school year.

Ideas for a Fun, Productive Summer

  • Refresh school gear — Clean out and wash backpacks and lunchboxes.
  • Practice academic skills — Keep multiplication facts, reading, and writing fresh.
  • Read daily — Even 20–30 minutes helps keep minds engaged. Try fun challenges like the Barnes & Noble Summer Reading program.
  • Visit the library — Enjoy books, activities, and free events.
  • Explore camps and activities — Look for programs that spark creativity and curiosity.
  • Encourage creativity — Stock up on craft supplies and let imaginations run wild.
  • Access free summer meals — Free breakfast and lunch are available Monday–Thursday at school sites.
    • Click HERE for the school‑site meal flyer with dates, times and school sites offering free breakfast and lunch during the summer months.
    • Click HERE to access the flyer and registration QR code with information about the 7 day meal kits with pick up every Thursday.

Summer is a chance to rest and reset—but staying lightly engaged helps students return to school confident and ready.

Getting Ready for the New School Year

  • Register early — If your child is entering public school for the first time, register for the 2026–2027 school year as soon as possible. Early registration helps schools plan staffing and resources. Click HERE to register for the upcoming school year.
  • Complete required health forms — The NC Health Transmittal Form must be submitted within the first 30 days of school. Make sure to schedule doctor visits in advance of the end of summer break. Click HERE to access the Health Transmittal Form
    • Students playing middle or high school sports will also need a sports physical.
  • Prepare rising kindergarteners — Visit the school playground, practice opening lunch items, rehearse carpool routines, and work on basic skills like writing their name and identifying numbers 1–10.
  • Ease back into routines — Two weeks before school starts, reintroduce school‑year bedtimes and morning routines.
  • Purchase school supplies — Gather needed materials early to avoid last‑minute stress.
  • Attend Open House — Thursday, August 20 — Meet your child’s teacher and get familiar with the classroom.
  • If you missed PPS‑PC’s Kindergarten 101 Workshop, watch the recorded session HERE.
