PCS Budget Request Presentation to County Commissioners

On Wednesday May 6th PCS District leaders will present their budget request to the County Commissioners. Around 17% of the funding for the PCS Budget comes from local dollars. The total amount of dollars that the County Commissioners approve for PCS helps determine what PCS is able to include in the final budget proposal. With a decrease in the funding from the state government for the upcoming school year every local dollar is more critical to support the PCS budget.

YOU can show your support of public schools and let the County Commissioners know how important public schools are to our community by attending the meeting on May 6th. That meeting will take place on the 2nd floor at the county offices located at 1717 W. 5th Street. The PCS budget proposal is on the agenda at 9:30 but adjustments to the agenda often occur. The meeting starts at 8:30 and public school supporters are encouraged to arrive as close as possible to the start of the meeting time.

2026-2027 State Budget Considerations and Local Budget Planning Q&A

The state of North Carolina remains the only state in the country that has not approved a state budget. Without a state budget agencies continue to work off of budget numbers from 2023, the last year the state approved a budget. The needs of the school district have changed drastically since that time frame. Pitt County Schools anticipates receiving approximately six million less dollars from the state than the district received for the 2025-26 school year.

The district put together a Q&A to answer many of the questions put forth by community members related to the anticipated decrease in funding from the state for the upcoming school year. You can view that Q&A by clicking HERE

2026-2027 School Reassignment Applications and Registration

The Reassignement application window is open and will remain open for families currently enrolled in Pitt County Schools to complete through June 30th. One of the primary reasons a family would fill out a Reassignment Application is to request to attend an Open Enrollment School. The list of approved Open Enrollment Schools for the 26-27 school year is updated on a regular basis and can be reviewed HERE.

Registration for incoming kindergarten students is ongoing. Beginning on May 1st families with a rising 1st – 12th grader who is interested in registering a child to attend a Pitt County School that was not enrolled during the 25-26 school year will be able to register their child for the upcoming school year. Families can complete the registration application by clicking HERE.

As a reminder students entering Pitt County Schools for the first time, regardless of age, will need to have a physician complete the NC Health Assessment Transmittal Form.
