The Parent Engagement Program (PEP) continues to stand as one of PPS‑PC’s most transformative initiatives—an immersive, hands-on learning experience offered free of charge to all participants. At a time when public schools across North Carolina face unprecedented challenges, PEP provides something invaluable: a pathway for parents, caregivers, and community members to deepen their understanding of public education and become informed, confident advocates for students and schools.
Since the first cohort launched in 2014–2015, PEP has welcomed more than 175 participants across eight cohorts. In 2025–2026, PPS‑PC proudly expanded access even further by introducing the first-ever Spanish-language cohort, offering the full program entirely in Spanish.
Why PEP Matters
PEP is designed to strengthen positive parent engagement and build meaningful collaboration between families and schools through data-driven, customized training. Participants take part in a dynamic series of experiences that help them:
- Complete interactive learning modules
- Connect with fellow public school supporters
- Identify barriers that impact student success
- Build skills to advocate effectively for students and schools
The North Carolina Constitution guarantees the right to a high-quality public education. PEP equips participants with the knowledge, context, and tools needed to champion strong public schools in their communities.

Participant Testimonials
“I am profoundly grateful for the experiences the Parent Engagement Program has provided for me and my fellow cohort participants. The knowledge I’ve gained about the public education system as a whole, and my role as a parent within it, has been invaluable. Because of Parents for Public Schools, I now feel equipped to be a strong advocate not only for my children, but for others in public schools, and I hope to continue my advocacy journey far beyond the end of our cohort.” Rosa Ruiz, PEP Participant
“As a parent of children who attend Pitt County Schools, the PEP program was especially meaningful to me because it gave me a clearer understanding of what happens behind the scenes in our school system. It helped me feel more connected to the people and decisions that impact my children every day. I appreciated the transparency, the opportunity to ask questions, and the chance to build relationships with other parents and school leaders.” Colleen Sicley, PEP Participant
