A New Fiscal Year Begins at PPS‑PC
As PPS‑PC transitions into a new fiscal year on July 1, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the work completed over the past twelve months—and to look ahead with excitement and purpose.
- Over 550 participants attended 1 or more of the 60+ school tours offered during the school year
- 27 participants in the English and Spanish PEP Cohorts which included the first ever Spanish PEP Cohort offered in Pitt County
- Over 100 participants attended one of the three Kindergarten 101 Workshops including one offered entirely in Spanish
- Two Public Schools 101 Workshops for Business Leaders
- Community Connections at school and community events held around Pitt County participating as a vendor and sharing presentations about the work and mission of PPS-PC
- Advocacy trip to Raleigh including tour of the General Assembly and visiting elected officials offices
- Monthly newsletter helping to keep the community informed and engaged
- Stuff the Bus School Supply drive collected over 13,000 items that PCS School Social workers shared with the schools and students who needed them the most
Our Board of Directors recently wrapped up its June meeting, where members completed key annual responsibilities: approving the 2026–2027 budget, electing new board officers, and identifying strong candidates to join the board in the year ahead.
The weeks between the end of the school year and the start of a new one offer an important window for planning, evaluation, and renewal. This is when PPS‑PC finalizes the previous year’s work and lays the foundation for the programs, partnerships, and advocacy efforts that will shape the year to come.
None of this would be possible without the generous support of our community. Local businesses, foundations, and individual donors have played a vital role in sustaining our mission. Because of this ongoing generosity, PPS‑PC has been able to offer all programming completely free of charge since PPS-PC launched in July 2013 —ensuring that every parent, caregiver, and community member can participate without barriers.

Federal Education Updates – Propose Funding Cuts and Special Education Office Closure
Recently, the U.S. House proposed large funding cuts for public schools and the Department of Education announced the closure of key offices that protect students with disabilities.
PROPOSED FUNDING CUTS
- The U.S. House recently released their proposed FY27 education budget.
- It includes a nearly $2 billion cut (10%) to the Title I program, which provides funding for schools in low-income communities. It also eliminates federal funding for teacher professional development and English language learner support.

SPECIAL EDUCATION OFFICE CLOSURE
- The Department of Education has proposed moving the Office of Special Education to the Department of Health and Human Services and the Office of Civil Rights to the Department of Justice. You can read more about these proposed changes here. Federal law requires that these offices be within the Department of Education because other departments do not have staff with education expertise.

Pitt County Schools Summer Schedule
PCS will operate on a 4-day work week schedule through August 7 – 7:30 am – 5:30 pm
July 4 Holiday Week: District offices will be open Monday, June 29 – Wednesday July 2. Normal operating hours will resume on Monday, August 10.
