The Parent Engagement Program (PEP) participants came together on May 13 for a joyful and inspiring celebration honoring participants from the 2025–2026 English and Spanish cohorts. Each participant received a certificate recognizing their commitment, and representatives from both cohorts shared reflections on how the program shaped their understanding of public education and strengthened their confidence as advocates. PEP facilitators closed the event with words of encouragement—challenging graduates to continue using their voices, skills, and leadership to support strong public schools.
This year’s success was made possible through the support of valued partners, including the Pitt County Educational Foundation, The Eddie & Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation, and GUC. We also extend heartfelt thanks to Holly Hill Original Free Will Baptist Church for generously hosting the Spanish-language cohort.

Why PEP Matters
PEP remains one of PPS‑PC’s most transformative initiatives—an immersive, hands-on learning experience offered free of charge to all participants. At a time when public schools across North Carolina face unprecedented challenges, PEP provides something essential: a pathway for parents, caregivers, and community members to become informed, confident advocates.
Since launching in 2014–2015, PEP has welcomed more than 175 participants across eight cohorts. The 2025–2026 year marked a milestone with the introduction of the first-ever Spanish-language cohort, expanding access and strengthening community connections.
Participants engage in experiences that help them:
- Complete interactive learning modules
- Connect with fellow public school supporters
- Identify barriers to student success
- Build advocacy skills
The North Carolina Constitution guarantees access to a high‑quality public education for all students. PEP equips families with the tools to champion strong public schools in their communities, helping make the guarantee of a high-quality public education more of a reality.
Immersive Learning
Participants will engage in real‑world experiences such as:
- Attending a school board meeting
- Volunteering in a local school
- Participating in PTA or Title I events
These experiences deepen understanding of how schools operate and how families can support student success.
Spanish-Language Cohort
PPS‑PC is committed to expanding access for Spanish-speaking families.
