At Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County (PPS-PC), our mission is simple yet vital: to advance the role of families and communities in securing a high-quality public education for each child. This mission guides everything we do—because when families are engaged and informed, public schools grow stronger, students thrive, and communities flourish.

Did You Know?

  • 87% of Pitt County students attend public schools.
  • Pitt County Schools serves more than 24,000 students across 39 schools, making it the 13th largest school district in North Carolina out of 115 districts.
  • In Spring 2025, PPS-PC offered Parent Engagement Program (PEP) modules in Spanish for the first time, expanding access for multilingual families.

Public schools are facing unprecedented challenges—from funding gaps to staffing shortages—yet remarkable things are happening in Pitt County every day. Thanks to the dedication of educators, families, and community partners, our schools continue to serve as the backbone of a strong local economy and a healthy democracy. With the right resources, every child in Pitt County can reach their full potential.

Parent Engagement Program (PEP)

For over a decade, PEP has been a cornerstone of our work. Designed to equip and empower parents and community members, PEP cohorts offer an engaging learning experience that deepens participants’ understanding of public education in Pitt County and North Carolina. These cohorts prepare families and community leaders to be informed advocates for a high-quality education—a right guaranteed by the North Carolina Constitution.

Since launching our first cohort in 2014–2015, PPS-PC has hosted 9 PEP cohorts, including  over 175 participants. In addition to PEP cohorts, PEP also includes targeted workshops such as Kindergarten 101 and Public Schools 101 for Business and Community Leaders.

PEP Highlights

  • 18 cohort members met monthly from October 2024 to May 2025, learning about school leadership, culture, curriculum, special education, funding, governance, and how to support all students.
  • 12 individuals attended three Spanish PEP workshops in Spring 2025—led by PEP graduates Hazel and Juan.
  • Over 100 families attended one of three Kindergarten 101 workshops in January 2025, including our first-ever Spanish session.
  • The 2025–2026 PEP cohort launched in September with 15 participants.
  • The first full Spanish-language PEP cohort—a historic milestone—began in 2025–2026 with 13 participants.
  • The first Public Schools 101 for Business & Community Leaders workshop in Pitt County was offered in October 2025.

These numbers represent more than participation—they represent voices, relationships, and advocates strengthening our public schools.
