PCS Family Update: School Choice including Reassignment

Pitt County Schools is committed to offering families meaningful options when selecting the best learning environment for their children. For the 2026–2027 school year, families may pursue school choice through two main pathways:

  • The PCS School Lottery (application window closed March 15)
  • School Reassignment, which includes Open Enrollment – (application opens April 1)

Recent updates to PCS Student Assignment Policy 4150 have adjusted several dates and timelines. Please review the information below carefully to ensure you don’t miss important deadlines.

School Reassignment (Including Open Enrollment)

Reassignment Request Application Opens: April 1

School reassignment provides additional school choice options for:

  • Current PCS students
  • Students enrolling in PCS for the first time

This includes Open Enrollment, based on the Board‑approved list of Open Enrollment Schools (viewable HERE).

Families may also request reassignment for:

  • A sibling enrolled at a non‑open‑enrollment school
  • PCS employee preference
  • Hardship or special circumstances
  • Curriculum availability

For CURRENT PCS Students:

Reassignment Request Window

  • April 1 – June 30
  • Last five days of the first semester

Requests may take up to 10 days to process.

For Students NEW to PCS:

Reassignment Request Window

  • Opens: April 1
  • Closes:
    • Last five days of the 3rd reporting period (grades K–8)
    • Last five days of the 5th six‑week grading period (grades 9–12)

All Reassignment requests, including open enrollment, are reviewed first‑come, first‑served.

Grade levels may close once capacity is reached.

Important: Families not currently enrolled in PCS should wait for reassignment approval before completing the registration process.
