The Pitt County School District is the 13th largest public school district out of 115 in the state of North Carolina. It is also one of the top five fastest growing school districts in the state. Including Pre-K the 2024-25 PCS enrollment includes over 24,300 students.

Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year will begin in March. This article includes information about Pre-K Enrollment, Kindergarten Enrollment, Open Enrollment and transition to Public School from Private School Enrollment. Student enrollment, regardless of age, is completed online through a central portal for all schools. The portal will select the school assigned to the address and grade level of the student being enrolled. If you intend to attend a school outside of your assigned school based on your address through open enrollment you will need to apply for open enrollment and wait for a response from that application before completing the enrollment application.

To enroll a child in a Pitt County School, you will need the following documents: photo identification, student’s birth certificate, copy of up-to-date immunization records, NC Health Assessment (required if entering Kindergarten or public school for the 1st time in North Carolina), and two proofs of residence. It is recommended to get the NC Health Assessment form completed by your students’ pediatrician as soon as possible as doctor appointments are more difficult to schedule close to the first day of school. State law requires this document to be on file at the school within the first 30 days of the start of the school year.

Before completing the enrollment application you can verify the zoned Elementary, Middle and High School for your address using the school zone finder here: https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/265

You can access the Enrollment application portal using this link: https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/263

Pre-K Enrollment –

Pre-K enrollment applications will be available in March. All enrollment applications are processed through the Sadie Saulter Pre-K Center. In addition to Pre-K classrooms on site at Sadie Sautler Pre-K Center there are sites at several PCS elementary and K8 schools as well as several sites located at private day care centers. The goal of PCS Pre-K is to provide experiences each preschooler needs to increase their communication, academic, and social skills so that they are well prepared to enter kindergarten.

In March you can access the Pre-K Enrollment application using this link – https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/8904

You can learn more about the Sadie Saulter Pre-K Center at the upcoming tour on Tuesday March 4th at 9 am.

Kindergarten Enrollment –

State law requires a child to be five years old before August 31 to enter kindergarten. Kindergarten enrollment can be completed online using a desktop, laptop, or cell phone from your home. You may also go to the school of your assigned district and use the registration kiosk in the main office. Pitt County Schools Kindergarten Registration dates are March 1 – April 3*. Once the school receives your application they will reach out with additional information including when the school will conduct kindergarten assessments.

PPS-PC hosted their annual Kindergarten 101 workshops in January. If you were not able to attend one of those workshops you can view the recorded workshop here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MuBgwD9n98&list=PLzh6Bm07Ij87ZP6nxoQzO_kpZxkpMzmbv

*Kindergarten Registration is not required March 1 – April 3 but is encouraged. Early registration helps schools plan for the upcoming school year by identifying the expected number of enrolled students and helps to ensure bus transportation on the first day of school if needed.

Open Enrollment –

To increase enrollment and maximize opportunities, a student may be reassigned to another school participating in open enrollment. Click this link to see a list of eligible open enrollment schools during the 2025-26 school year- https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/394

Open Enrollment for the 2025-26 school year will begin on March 1st and end on August 15th. The district will not begin processing Open Enrollment applications until March 16th. After that date families will begin to be notified about the status of their Open Enrollment request. Specific grade levels and schools are removed from the Open Enrollment list once capacity in that grade level or at that school is reached. Families are encouraged to apply for Open Enrollment as soon as possible. Once your student is accepted into a school through Open Enrollment it is valid through the exit grade of that school. Before completing the Open Enrolment application make sure the application is for the 2025-26 school year. You can access the Open Enrollment application using this link: https://www.pitt.k12.nc.us/Page/394

Enrollment from Private to Public –

If you are enrolling your child at the base school based on your address you can enroll for the 2025-26 school year as soon as the enrollment for next school year begins in March. If you are seeking to attend a school through open enrollment you will need to complete that application first and wait for a response before completing the enrollment application. For high school students once the school receives your enrollment application the school will reach out to set up a meeting to discuss your students desired class schedule. As a reminder if the 2025-26 school year will be the first year that your student attends a public school you will need to submit a NC Health Assessment.
