Recently, a coalition of national, state, and local disability, civil rights, and education organizations released a statement condemning the Department of Education for ending support for students with disabilities.

Parents for Public Schools of Pitt County has joined hundreds of organizations in expressing concern over recent layoffs within the U.S. Department of Education that have reduced staffing in key offices supporting students with disabilities. These cuts threaten enforcement and oversight of essential laws such as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act which protect students’ rights to an equitable education.

IDEA ensures that children with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education tailored to their individual needs. Section 504 prohibits discrimination based on disability and guarantees that students with disabilities have equal access to learning environments, programs, and activities. Together, these laws form the foundation of educational access and inclusion for millions of students across the country. PPS-PC remains committed to advocating for policies that uphold these protections and ensure all students have the support they need to succeed.
