Parent Engagement Program –

When parents and schools work together everybody wins. Informed and engaged parents and community members are essential to the educational success of children. Parents for Public Schools has developed a set of programs (Parent Engagement Programs – PEP) that help parents and community members understand how to navigate their children’s educational journey. The PPS Chapter in Pitt County offers the Early Child Development PEP and the Parent Engagement Program (PEP) Cohort.

The Early Childhood Development Parent Engagement Program (ECD PEP) is designed for parents and caregivers of children 0-5 years of age. ECD PEP is an easy to understand child development curriculum based on research from the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child at Harvard University. The modules teach parents, caregivers and educators how to utilize hands-on activities and strategies to support healthy childhood development during early years.

During the ECD PEP Cohort participants meet for 4 sessions and topics covered include: basics of brain development and how the early building blocks of learning begin with healthy brain development, recognition of development milestones, the importance of the child-caregiver relationship, and the impact of stress and trauma on development. One of the goals of ECD PEP is to ensure a healthy start for young children and parents to become effective education partners.

The next ECD PEP Cohort will meet from 9:00 – 11:30 on September 17th, October 1st, October 15th and October 29th. If you are interested in being a part of that cohort please complete the online registration form – https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd_jEqBRgm2njdOjSUp_4JhtOrr4fNeE7DasJABfzEONsFbgQ/viewform?usp=sf_link

The PEP program provides data-driven, customized training that authentically engages parents and improves schools in the process. By working with school administrators and teachers, our participants will reduce barriers to learning and bring the community into the process of strengthening schools.

During the 2024-2025 school year PPS-PC will be offering a PEP Cohort open to parents and other community members who want to strengthen public schools in Pitt County. Participants will be selected on the basis of:

-Leadership potential

-Interest and/or active participation in schools and community

-Willingness to develop and implement a leadership plan

-Commitment to attend all sessions and to maintain an ongoing connection with the PPS network

The 2024-2025 Cohort will meet from 8:30 – 2:30 once a month from September through May. The cohort is free for all participants.
